Paper Recycling and Circular Economy in the Pulp & Paper Industry

Paper recycling is the core pillar of the circular economy for paper products. Fiber can be recycled several times before cellulose fibers become too short and lose strength. For this reason, recycled pulp is often mixed with virgin fiber to maintain product quality. Corrugated packaging uses the highest share of recycled fiber globally. Recycling reduces landfill waste significantly. Paper waste accounts for a large share of municipal solid waste, and effective recycling cuts methane emissions from landfills.

However, paper recycling faces practical barriers. Contamination is the biggest problem. Food residue, plastic tape and mixed foreign materials ruin waste paper batches and increase processing costs. Consumers and companies need better sorting habits. Different regions also have inconsistent waste collection systems, affecting recycling efficiency.

Many paper mills build closed-loop production systems. They reuse process water and recover heat during production. Governments and enterprises cooperate to improve waste paper collection networks and raise public awareness. In a circular system, paper is no longer a single-use item discarded after use. It becomes a reusable raw material stream. Promoting paper recycling helps the whole paper industry reduce carbon footprint and achieve sustainable low-carbon development.
